Yesterday’s first show at Hotel Providence was the autumn/winter line of Nirva from designer Nirva Derbekyan. Nirva was looking to showcase the colors, feel and drama from the 1993 documentary Latcho Drom which chronicled the journey and culture of the Romany people. Her line was definitely a feast to the eyes with a rich and beautiful color palate featuring deep blues and dusty pinks. Her looks had the spirit of the Gypsies and the refinement of skilled designer.
Some of my favorite pieces included Bayana which featured a black silk taffeta and silver silk metallic dress with chiffon overlay and Sana a red wool asymmetric coat jacket. She also had a dress that was a complete departure from the rest of her work and that caused it to stand out in a good way that was inspiring. The look, Sabina, is a black silk asymmetric dress with cut out detailing that showed what Nirva was capable of pushing the envelope with her design in new ways yet keeping true to her aesthetic. Excellent work! See more of her work HERE.
The next show was a combination of efforts led by legendary designer Andrea Valentini. After making an incredible name for herself in interior architechture and design she has launched an incredible handbag and accessory line at her new flagship gallery right here in Providence. Her accessories will be featured along side the clothing designs of David Yoo and Joe Segal in a truly collaborative effort.
This show was AMAZING. It was expertly put together and David Yoo’s designs smacked me in the face with new and innovative ideas. The models were styled brilliantly and there were several rounds of applause during the show. The featured womenswear was expertly tailored and finished and were the perfect canvas to properly showcase Valentini’s luxurious handbags and accessories. The menswear portion was just as phenomenal with a long outerwear jacket that was beautiful designed and unbelievably tailored. Joe Segal’s impressive knitwork was also featured and his eclectic style really meshed well with the work of Yoo and Valentini.
There’s more to Valentini than quality bags. Check out her work and what she’s bringing to advance art in Providence HERE. Keep your eye on David Yoo as he will be the next great thing HERE and look for Joe Segal’s impressive work HERE.
Style Week Providence continues to draw movers and shakers in the art world to the shows. Thursday saw the likes of Providence Mayor David Cicilline, and legendary designer Andres Aquino and many more. Were you there? See the pictures HERE.
