When outsiders think of Rhode Island they usually think of Newport, seafood, and the America’s Cup but there’s an event starting today that will add a little style to Little Rhody: Style Week Providence.
Style Week Providence is an artistic showcase eighteen of fashion designers of womenswear, menswear, jewelry and shoes that will grace the Creative Capitol starting today. Founder and creative visionary Rosanna Ortiz Sinel of Miamore Communications started putting together the pieces of this fashion extravaganza 9 months ago and assembled quite an incredible line up of designers as well as sponsors for the non-profit event.
From Project Runway alums Jonathan Joseph Peters and Maya Luz to break out stars Karen Sabag and Jeffrey Lahens, the dossier is impressive. When I spoke to Rosanna on my radio show on Thursday I asked her what her goals for Style Week were and she spoke of a desire to have the event properly showcase the designer’s work and properly showcase the city. She also expressed a desire to have the event evolve to twice yearly with a continued emphasis on lauching new designers out into the world. In my opinion, she’s well on the right track but the proof will be made this evening when fashion buyers and press (including yours truly) attend the kick-off events at the Marriott Providence.

3:30 pm – Honoring Jay Calderin, Founder & Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week
4:30pm – Cocktail Hour presented by Balance by James Joseph
6pm - Karan Sabag Couture Runway Show featuring shoes by Goka Design
7pm – Selah D’or Runway Show by David Chum
8:30pm – After-Event Soirée at State Lounge
I, of course, will be attending all events and will be keeping you informed of the fashion, the people, and the city as the inaugural Style Week Providence unfolds!
